While Saturday featured some classic contests and nail-biting finishes in other arenas across the country, there was no louder or more emphatic statement made than the one made by the Mountain West Conference’s regular-season champions.
The Brigham Young Cougars defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs to secure their first trip to the Sweet 16 in 30 years. It was three decades to the day of the Cougars’ last win in the second round of NCAA Tournament. There is only one sheriff in the West Coast Conference and its name is Gonzaga.
Despite a mid-season struggle which saw the ten-time defending conference champions lose three straight games and see their dominance of conference brethren seemingly come to an end, the Bulldogs from Spokane found the gumption needed to revive their season and finish with a bang.

It was as if neither Gonzaga or San Francisco wanted to punch a ticket to the West Coast Conference Tournament final. One of these squads was the 10-time defending conference champion.
